How Many Calories to Gain Weight Are Needed:

How many calories to gain weight are needed is a very common question. It’s asked by skinny people who desire to add some bulk to their underweight frames. And it’s also asked by average sized people who want to bulk up to a more muscular body.

The answer to this question is the same for each of these two groups of people. For every pound of weight you want to add to your body — you must consume about 3500 calories more then your body burns.

How Many Calories to Gain Weight:

If you currently have a diet of 2500 calories and you are maintaining a body weight of 170 pounds, then eating an additional 500 calories a day for 7 days would put you at 171 pounds.

Now, of course every other variable would have to remain exactly the same. You body would need to retain the exact same amount of water as when you were 170 pounds. Your amount of daily activity would have to be exactly the same. And the amount of food in your stomach and intestines would have to weigh the same. But, you get the picture.

The 3500 calories for an extra pound of body weight stays the same. But, what may not stay the same, is what calorie level you need to maintain your current body weight. If your activity level increases — you will need to increase calorie consumption to maintain your current weight. If your metabolism increases then you’ll need more calories to keep your weight steady.

If your goal is to gain weight, then I suggest you eat calorie dense foods like:

  • Pasta
  • Nuts
  • Dried fruits
  • Cheese
  • Guacamole
  • Peanut butter
  • Salmon
  • Butter or margarine.
  • Dressings
  • Pure fruit juices

If you want to gain weight, then you might as well eat healthy high calorie foods instead.

Also, there is a calculator that you can use to measure/ count the calories that you need in order to gain healthy weight and quit asking as how many calories to weight gain are needed.
